The Ada, the protagonist, was prayed into existence by her parents. However, her birth was not what they were hoping for. A trouble child, The Ada was prone to violent fits. As it turned out, The Ada was born with a connection to “the other side”, causing multiple selves to develop inside her. When she moves to the United States for university, and experiences a life shattering event, her “selves” create a distant identity as a means to “protect her”. Now more powerful than they had been growing up, The Ada begins to lose sight of who she was in Nigeria. It isn’t long until Ada’s life begins to spiral out of control.
Why this should be the one book you read in February?
Akwaeke Emezi’s debut novel, Freshwater, will take you on an extraordinary journey of identities – what we are born with and how they can be shaped by our experiences. It is truly one-of-a-kind and the most creative book I have read in a long while. Hauntingly dark, and absolutely nothing like I thought it would be, Emezi has perfectly expressed what it feels like to never truly belong. Emezi herself has quoted on her instagram that this is “possibly the most personal work since my [her] book over @thecut.” This was the spiritual awakening I did not know that I needed. Never before, have I been able to connect and relate to a novel as much as this one. A review would have not done this novel justice. That is why, Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi was selected to be my first byairandland Book Club Pick. If you read this book and are on Goodreads, please join my Virtual Book Club and share your thoughts and opinion. If you aren’t, I would love to hear what you thought of the novel by snapping a picture of the book and tagging #baalbookclub on Instagram and Twitter.
